Here are our top tips for getting the most out of these seasonal spears.
We’re right in the midst of local asparagus season, and it’s one of our favourite times of the year. But to get the most out of these versatile spears of goodness, we thought we’d share some top tips to bring out the best in this market favourite.
Storing your asparagus
There are a few options here, depending on what you’ve got handy and how much space you have. You can try putting the spears in a jar of water in the fridge (like a vase of flowers), alternatively, you can wrap them in a damp tea towel before placing them in the crisper.
It’s especially important to wash your asparagus well. It’s easy for sand and dirt to get caught up in the delicate tips of your spears; not a pleasant experience to bite into!
Trimming your asparagus
Not sure how much asparagus to trim off the end? Try gently bending the end of each stalk and it should naturally break where it needs to.
Grilling your asparagus
Make sure you select thick, meaty spears that will withstand the heat of the barbecue if you’re planning on taking them to the grill.
Asparagus in a salad?
We have two favourite ways of adding asparagus to our spring and summer salads. Firstly, by blanching very lightly, ensuring your spears retain their bright green colour, before immersing them in an ice bath and then drying them gently. Secondly, by using a vegetable peeler to peel long beautiful strips off your raw asparagus and add in as is. Trust us, you’ll love it.
